FAQs About Nursery Cots:

What age can babies go in cots?

Generally speaking, the best age for babies to move from a Moses basket or crib to a cot is between four to six months old. Or until your baby starts to push up onto their hands and knees and sits unaided.

Where should a cot be placed in a nursery?

The most ideal area for your baby cot should be right up against a wall with little to no gaps, or at least 30 cm away from the wall. This is to ensure that the baby cannot get trapped between the wall and the side of the cot when they do learn to climb out. Some other things you should look out for include:

  • Avoiding windows and blinds - avoid placing the cot next to a window. This is for two reasons, firstly temperature can fluctuate near a window and make it too hot or cold for the baby. The second reason is that the cords from blinds and curtains can pose a strangulation hazard.
  • Away from sources of direct heat - this includes radiators or heaters as this can pose a fire hazard.
  • Away from hazards - Keep away from hanging wall decorations, cords or any other items that a baby might be curious to pull down or get entangled in. Some other hazards include shelves and heavy objects near the cot.
  • Away from power outlets and cords - make sure that the cot isn’t near electrical outlets where cords could be pulled into the cot. Ensure that outlets are covered with safety covers.
  • Accessibility for parents - consider the cot's relative position to your own bed. This is especially important if you plan on waking up multiple times in the night for feeds and changes.
  • Ensure there is enough room to move around - this is so you can lift the baby in and out of the cot easily
  • Stability - ensure that the cot is on a stable surface and that the unit itself is stable. Ensure that there are no loose legs or screws

What size is a cot?

Standard cots measure approximately 65cm x 125cm. However, cots can be larger than this, with those types of cots designed to last until the child is around 4 to 5 years old. Overall a cot is a great choice for homes and nurseries that are limited in space.
