Maths Counters and Counting Resources

Math counters are small objects that children can use to count and move around to help solve math problems. They can come in a variety of shapes and colours and help enhance children's understanding of place value.

Math counters are great for performing basic maths including addition, subtraction, counting, pattern making and number comparisons in a fun and visual way. With counters, children can practice their number skills up to five digits and with fractions and decimals. Ask your children to show you a specific number using counters, or group counters based on size, shape and colour. The possibilities with maths counters are endless! Math counters are also great for keeping track of children’s position on a number line for active maths activities.

Why are counters good for maths? 

Yes, counters are great to use to introduce children to maths. Some of the main reasons counters are great for maths include:

  • Acts as a visual aid during math problem solving 
  • Encourages discussion in the classroom, allowing children to explain their reasoning, strategies and justify their answers. 
  • Easier to spot errors during problem-solving in maths. 

How do you teach counting with counters? 

There are many different ways you can use counters to teach counting to children. Some great ways include: 

Simple counting practice: 

  • Spread out the counters and ask students to count them 
  • Make sure that they touch or move each counter as they count to reinforce one-to-one correspondence

Grouping and regrouping: 

  • Group counters into sets of two, five or ten
  • This is a great way to introduce children to skip counting.

Compare quantities: 

  • Place to separate groups of counters and ask children which has more or fewer 
  • Great for introducing comparison and basic operation

How do you use counters in fractions?

There are many ways you can use counters to teach children fractions. When doing this, introduce them to the whole, which can be 10 counters. 

Simple fractions: 

  • Halves: divide the 10 counters into two equal groups
  • Thirds, Fourths: Divide the whole set of counters into 3,4,or more groups

Adding and subtracting fractions: 

  • Addition: Use different coloured counters to represent different fractions and have your children add them together to form a whole. 
  • Subtraction: start with a fraction and ask children to subtract another fraction from it. 

Comparing fractions:

  • Place two sets of counters to represent different fractions, Then ask students which is the larger or smaller fraction. 

Improper fractions: 

Discuss with children that fractions can be greater than a whole. Use 10 counters as a whole and add an additional 2 counters to represent 12/10 for example. Then have your children convert these mixed numbers into fractions
