A pattern is a mathematical concept relating to the arrangement of objects and things. The main component of a pattern is the rules associated with it. Pattern resources help early years children identify the rule in a sequence and understand why something is considered a pattern.
EYFS pattern resources help children understand how to apply rules to mathematics and form the foundation for maths learning for key areas including recall of counting sequence and number operations. Outside of mathematics these types of resources help to develop problem-solving and logical thinking skills. Children begin to look out for patterns, relationships and connections between concepts in other areas of learning as well as in their surroundings in real life. Pattern development also helps children form their predictions of events and form logical connections about situations.
Our range of EYFS pattern resources includes pegboards which children can use alongside our pack of pegs to create different shapes, patterns and sequences using different colours, shape beads which children can string together to form different patterns of colours and shapes and pattern match-up cards which children can try and match up two cards to form the correct pattern.
