Outdoor Classrooms

This blog post has been written by Jeanette Morris our in-house Early Years Specialist who has over 33 years of teaching experience and a real passion for Early Years Education.

Having taught for more years than I care to remember, and having lived through more initiatives in primary education than I care to remember, I must confess to being slightly sceptical when I was introduced to the concept of the Outdoor Classroom.

It was hot on the heels of the EYFS, Early Learning Goals, continuous and enhanced provision, learning through play, independent learning… all revolutionary developments in Early Year’s Education, but still, how on earth were we going to set up, resource and manage it? With much trepidation, our Early Year’s team did what we always did, embraced the challenge, dug out our waterproofs and wellies and got stuck in.

The effect was immediate, indoors and out, suddenly the overwhelming presence of my 21 four and five year old boys became manageable and my 9 little ladies emerged from the reading area and writing table. Noise levels were now within normal parameters, but most of all, every single child was engaged in high level learning. It didn’t take long for us to realise that this was the last piece in our provision plan and we set about finding the best, most innovative resources we could.

We were very happy to utilise donated items and quickly realised that building and plumbing products were perfect for outdoor discovery and investigation. In the early days, outdoor product ranges were very limited and brightly coloured plastic was the order of the day, but fortunately, the value of using natural resources is now widely recognised and fantastic outdoor resources have been developed.

Below are just a few of our Outdoor Classroom Resources we have developed here at Early Years Resources:
